Mississippi State Football Fires Coach Zach Arnett
After a Disappointing Season
Mississippi State University has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after just one season. The decision was announced on Monday, December 11, 2023, following the Bulldogs' 51-10 defeat to Texas A&M. Arnett had a 4-6 record in 10 games in his first year as head coach in the 2023 season.
Leadership Change Needed
In a statement, Mississippi State Athletic Director John Cohen cited a need for a "leadership change" in the football program. "After careful consideration, I have made the decision to relieve Zach Arnett of his duties as head football coach," Cohen said. "This decision was not made lightly and is based on the need for a change in leadership to move our football program forward."
Arnett's Tenure
Arnett took over as head coach in February 2023, following the tragic passing of Mike Leach. He was previously the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State for seven seasons. In his one season as head coach, Arnett led the Bulldogs to a 2-6 record in Southeastern Conference play.
Offensive Analyst Takes Over
Mississippi State has named offensive analyst Greg Knox as interim head coach. Knox is a former assistant coach at Mississippi State and has also worked at Vanderbilt and Texas Tech. He will coach the Bulldogs in their final two games of the 2023 season.
Future of Mississippi State Football
Mississippi State will begin a search for a new head football coach immediately. The school hopes to find a coach who can build on the foundation laid by Arnett and lead the Bulldogs to success in the competitive SEC West Division.
