The Scotland national football team's Euro 2024 campaign got off to a dismal start, suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to hosts Germany in their opening match in Munich. Steve Clarke's men were outplayed throughout by a dominant German side led by Julian Nagelsmann.
Florian Wirtz, the 19-year-old Bayer Leverkusen star, opened the scoring for Germany with a low shot from just outside the penalty area. Scotland struggled to contain the German attack, and Julian Brandt soon doubled the lead with a fine strike from the edge of the box.
Scotland's task was made even more challenging when John McGinn was sent off for a reckless challenge on Leon Goretzka, leaving his team a man down for the majority of the match. Germany took full advantage of their numerical superiority, with goals from Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, and Leroy Sané completing the scoring.
The result leaves Scotland bottom of Group F, with a mountain to climb to qualify for the knockout stages. They face a tough task in their next match against the Netherlands, who defeated Czech Republic in their opening game.
